Winter Beauty by Joan Adams Burchell

When it's winter in the Valley
and my breath hangs in the air,
The snow will crunch beneath my feet
and glisten in the air.
The stars at night light up my world
so I never walk alone;
It's clear and crisp and beautiful
in the Valley I call home.

The Flight of Icarus

The greek mythological story of the flight of Icarus has, for some reason, always stuck out in my mind. I'm not exactly sure why it truly has, but thinking about it now, it must have all started with music.
At the time when the story was being told to me, I was into the band Iron Maiden and my favorite song was The Flight of the Icarus. From that came an better understanding of the story, and soon, I was using it as my aim address, then using it as just an alias. It just seemed to stick and I loved the story, I don't really know why.

Q: Do you think young people today value their education as much as Sara Smolinsky does? Why or why not?

Under the current status of being able to get an education easily, most young people do not value their education as much as Sara does, but I believe that if education was as hard to get now as it was back then, it would be held at a much greater value to younger people. It somewhat goes with the saying of you don't know how much you need something until its gone.

Challenging Writing

"There's nothing hard about writing. All you have to do is sit down and open up a vein" (Walter "Red" Smith).

Writing in itself is not hard; an essay can be typed out in a short amount of time, but perfect writing takes many revisions and polishing, so in that aspect I do agree with the quote.

Thoughts on The Bread Givers

I do enjoy reading about the stuggles of immigrants in the pre-great depression era, but at times I find it to be very saddening. The cast of characters is very irritating, with the father at the top of the list. His ignorance, laziness, overall stupidity, and opressive manner makes me want to scream at him myself, but also scream at the rest of the family for not doing anything about it. His tyrannous rule of the family and everything they do is rediculously irrational and occasionally can annoy me.

Besides the intended flaws in the personalities of the characters, I am enjoying the book.
