Show don't tell
Its cylindrical shape shines in the light, illuminating my next destination. The nice metal casing hides the destructive gears inside. It perfects, but also destroys, all who enter its domain, but I grab hold of its handle anyway. It holds its place on the wall as I spin its handle round. I can hear its gears grinding up its next victim, but I continue on anyway because perfection is what is necessary to keep my grades in tact. It finally finishes its destruction and I remove its victim from its dark depths and return to my essay. It can only be graded if it can be read and now I have legibility on my side.
